Why CD&V Rejects Alliance with Vlaams Belang: Sammy Mahdi’s Statement

The CD&V has no intention of joining forces with Vlaams Belang the day following the next elections, said the president of the Flemish Christian Democrats Sammy Madhi on Sunday, thus rejecting the call from his counterpart Tom Van Grieken.

Invited on the De Zevende Dag (VRT) set on Sunday noon, Mr. Madhi ruled out any alliance with the far-right group, leading in the polls in the north of the country.

“We will not work with Vlaams Belang. For this party, Flemish interests are Chinese interests,” attacked Mr. Mahdi, in reference to the recent spying scandal targeting former VB MP Frank Creyelman.

Last Sunday, Tom Van Grieken indicated that, if his party came first in next June’s election, he would then begin discussions with all the Flemish parties to try to form a government. While recognizing that the “overlap” (of ideas) was greater with the N-VA, the president of the VB nevertheless judged agreements also possible with the CD&V, particularly on socio-economic or ethical grounds.

For Sammy Mahdi, however, any rapprochement is excluded in light of the positioning of the VB. The former Secretary of State for Asylum and Migration notably pointed out on Sunday a recent interview with Filip Dewinter in Humo magazine as well as his remarks during a recent Belang electoral congress.

Filip Dewinter notably assured that the message of the party’s founding president, Karel Dillen, was “always the message of the party”. An unacceptable positioning in the eyes of Sammy Mahdi. “Karel Dillen was proud to be described as a fascist,” noted the president of the Flemish Christian Democrats.
