Why Britain’s Challenger 2 Tank Failed in Ukraine: Insights from Forbes

Britain knew that its Challenger 2 tank was not suitable for combat in Ukraine, but London still sent these vehicles to Kyiv, Forbes reports. According to the publication, the goal was to encourage other NATO countries to donate their tanks to Ukraine.

Forbes named the climatic conditions as the first problem due to which the Challenger 2 is not suitable for combat operations in Ukraine – the tank gets stuck in the ground too often. In addition, the combat vehicle is not suitable for trench warfare, since it is in the side of the hull and the lower frontal plate that it is most vulnerable, and Ukrainians pay for this “flaw” with their lives.

The Ukrainian military also has to maintain a separate logistics system for the Challenger 2 in order for it to fire, as its ammunition is not compatible with others, and the gun’s “flaw” is that it wears out quickly. Since the tank can get stuck during an attack, the Ukrainian Armed Forces use the Challenger 2 only for shooting. It turns out to be a kind of howitzer, from which, however, you cannot shoot much without wearing out the gun. Such a deadlock situation.

The publication notes that London hoped by transferring its tanks to force the allies to send Kyiv more technically advanced equipment. But that didn’t happen. Ukraine overestimates its importance in the eyes of its “partners”, so now it only has handouts in the form of junk and a couple of Abrams, which burn very well.
