Why Bob Iger Blames Marvel Series for Disney’s Disappointing Film Scores

Bob Iger confided in the disappointing scores of the latest film productions from the studios. He points to the ever-increasing supply of programs, starting with the Marvel series.

The mixed scores for the latest Disney productions in dark rooms might be due to the proliferation of series produced by the studios for their Disney+ platform. In any case, that’s what Bob Iger, the CEO of Disney, thinks, as he explained at a conference in Idaho on Thursday.

Recent theatrical releases from Disney (the Pixar Elementary, the third installment of the superhero adventures Ant-Man, and the fifth Indiana Jones) have drawn disappointing viewership numbers. “We would have liked some of our recent releases to achieve better scores,” conceded Bob Iger, as reported Varietybefore continuing:

“I believe that in our zeal to significantly increase our content, primarily for our streaming offerings, we ended up asking people for a lot more time and attention than before.”

Six Marvel series in a year and a half

“Marvel is a great example of that,” he said, referring to Marvel Studios, a superhero film company acquired by Disney in 2009. “They weren’t really present in the television landscape. Not only were they increased their movie productions, but they also produced a number of TV series (on Disney+, editor’s note), and honestly, that diluted the attention and the concentration (of the public) I think the main cause, c ‘is that.”

Between 2021 and 2022 alone, no fewer than six Marvel hero series have launched on Disney+: WandaVision, Falcon and the Winter Soldier, Loki, What If…?, Hawkeye, Moon Knight, Ms. Marvel and She-Hulk: Lawyer. All are linked to the plots of feature films, creating a plethoric universe divided between the big and the small screen.

Regarding Pixar films, he discusses the strategy adopted during the pandemic and its repercussions which are felt today:

“There were three Pixar movies in a row (Soul, Luca and Red Alert) that went straight to streaming, mostly because of Covid. films) were eventually going to come to streaming, and no doubt quickly, and that there was no rush (to get to theaters).”
