“Why Belgians Are Unhappy Despite Increasing Salaries and Benefits – A Comprehensive Study by Jobat”

Yet despite these increases, Belgians are unhappy. 32% of respondents give a rating
of 8/10 or more on their satisfaction with their salary conditions.

This figure is slightly lower than last year. And 4% lower than 2020.

However, since 2020, Jobat has observed a continuous increase in extras granted on top of salary : meal vouchers, end-of-year bonus, hospitalization insurance, thirteenth month, Internet subscription… and of course, the essential company car. The granting of car salaries has increased by 13% in five years.

So how to explain these increases in wages and benefits and at the same time this overall dissatisfaction with salary packages in Belgium? This includes differentiating between benefits that have a real impact on the purchasing power of workers and those that do not. An observation that Jobat does not deliver in this study.

Philippe Defeyt explain : “For example, it’s very good to have hospitalization insurance, but most workers don’t really activate it until a certain age except in the case of pregnant women. On the other hand, a meal voucher, most of the workers will use them the same month and in term Another aspect when one does not freely choose to affect one’s standard of living, one’s purchasing power, one is sometimes obliged to accept things which one does not want. We have more and more testimonials from employees who may be happy to have a company car but who do not ask to have a model as heavy and expensive as the one imposed on them”.

Please also note that when calculating your pension, a certain number of these advantages are not taken into account.
In the same way, it was seen in during the covid crisis. When a series of workers were laid off temporarily,
they realized that their unemployment benefit represented a much lower proportion than their previous standard of living, because these advantages did not give rise to allowances.
