LBanking fees will increase by 2.5% to 3% in 2024 compared to 2023. This is the conclusion of the annual survey of the consumer defense association CLCVpublished Tuesday January 9.
The study defines three types of consumers – “small”, “medium” and “large”. The small corresponds to a consumer who has only subscribed to basic services (account maintenance fees, immediate debit card, etc.). The medium corresponds to two holders each with a card with loss and theft insurance, a bank check every ten years… The large corresponds to two holders with a Gold or Premier card, insurance once morest loss and theft or still many withdrawals.
It is small and medium-sized consumers who experience the largest increase, of 2.97% and 3% respectively. Figures to put into perspective with inflation, at 3.7% over one year in December, according to INSEE. In practice, this will increase their annual fees to respective averages of 66.23 and 147.80 euros. For large consumers, the increase will be 2.52%, bringing the annual costs to 207.65 euros on average.
Account maintenance fees up 3%
The overall increase is mainly due to four elements. First, the increase in account maintenance fees, which amounts to 3%. Then, that of the cost of bank cards. It varies from 1.8% to 2.5%, depending on the cards. Then come the changes made by certain establishments to the rules applicable to withdrawals from ATMs (increase in the cost of withdrawals made in another network, reduction in the number of free withdrawals moved).
Banking service packages, not necessarily advantageous
Finally, the overall increase is explained by the increase in package prices, these bundled offers of banking services whose savings banks often boast compared to subscribing to à la carte services. On this subject, the study concludes that “the package is not always the most suitable and least expensive offer for the customer”.
For the small consumer, for example, the basket of services with a package can, at certain banks, be worth “nearly 3 times more”. Precisely, “it will only be financially beneficial to subscribe to the package in 5 banks: Crédit coopératif, Crédits mutuals Bretagne, Sud-Ouest et Maine-Anjou-Basse-Normandie, Bred”. “The average consumer will lose out in 38% of establishments, and the advantage is only valid in 49% of cases for the heavy consumer. »
What is the normal price of a bank card?
According to the study, the average cost of an immediate debit Visa or MasterCard is 45.67 euros, 45.57 euros for a deferred debit Visa or MasterCard.
For Visa Premier or Gold, this cost is 132.98 euros, but it reflects significant differences: from 115 euros for the cheapest card in this category (at Crédit agricole Brie-Picardie or Centre-France) to 149 euros (Île-de-France savings bank). Finally, it is 31 euros for a systematic authorization card offered to all audiences, with differences ranging from 16 euros (Crédits agricole Île-de-France or Touraine-Poitou) to 51 euros (Banque populaire Aquitaine-Centre-Atlantique ).
