Aston Martin reveals why Canadian GP asked Alonso to slow down
Aston Martin say a fuel system error was the reason they asked Fernando Alonso to slow down and coast at the Canadian GP.
In the closing stages of the race at Gilles Villeneuve, with Alonso running second and Mercedes AMG’s Lewis Hamilton chasing down on the softer medium tyres, Aston Martin asked the Spanish veteran to slow down and coast, but did not give without any explanation.
After the race, team principal Mike Krack revealed that Aston Martin had asked Alonso to do it because of an apparent problem with the fuel system, but it turned out to be a false alarm.
???? Tire Album》The journey of a thousand miles begins under the wheel, it’s regarding the size of the tires!
“We thought we had a fuel system problem, but we mightn’t be sure, so we thought it would be better to do a slow coast to save fuel,” Krack said.
Due to this unnecessary measure, Alonso was further widened by the leader Max Verstappen, and Hamilton was also close to within the range of DRS, but the Aston Martin team did not want to finish on the sixth podium of the year for the two-time world champion. Take any risk in the game.
Krack went on to say: “How much does this cost us? It’s really hard to assess, maybe a few tenths of a second, maybe 0.1 or 0.2 seconds. It’s a choice between getting to the finish line with a little more fuel, so we want to play it safe.”
While the Aston Martin team did not give a clear explanation for this, Alonso speculated that it was an instruction from the team “don’t want me to worry too much”, leaving the live broadcast unit, and even the rival team, to speculate on the nature of his troubles.
The Mercedes team told Hamilton over the radio that Alonso may have encountered a problem with the brakes. After all, the Gilles Villeneuve track is relatively strict for brakes and tires, which made everyone in the Aston Martin team on Pitwall smile knowingly. Krack added, “I’m also surprised that there are insights like these.”
“I think when Lewis was told we had a problem with the brakes, we looked at each other and said: ‘Oh, they know their cars better than we do! We should talk to all the Mercedes engineers. ’, but actually we don’t have any problems.”
