The number of accidents with serious injuries and deaths is the highest of the 10 official public holidays in Belgium.
Celebrated in the Christian world as the day on which Christ ascended to heaven, Ascension Thursday has been a public holiday in Belgium for several decades. A moment chosen by many workers to make the bridge, to take advantage of four days of rest by taking only one day off, Friday.
The opportunity, for many, to organize a dinner with colleagues, an aperitif with friends… often too drunk. According to statistics from the Vias Institute, collated for the last five years, 20% of accidents resulting in injuries or deaths recorded during the Ascension are due to excessive alcohol consumption.
