Why are Electric Car Owners Switching Back to Internal Combustion? Exploring the Challenges and Concerns

Although more electric cars have been sold, more and more owners would switch their electric vehicles back to internal combustion ones. What might be the problem? According to last year’s survey, just over 29,000 electric cars hit Hungarian roads out of a fleet of more than 4 million. However, there are few electric cars not only in Hungary, but also in Western European countries. In the Netherlands, where 4% of cars are already electric, it seems that owners are not exactly happy with their decision. Although the European green revolution will officially start in 2035, buyers are not in a great hurry for electric cars, and those who have switched to electric cars are considering returning to a car with an internal combustion engine. According to research conducted by VZR, a quarter of those who lease an electric vehicle say that they will definitely choose a hybrid the next time they buy a car. Another 24 percent will switch to gasoline, and 8 percent to diesel. Doing a quick calculation, only 43 percent of electric car users are satisfied with their decision and intend to buy an electric car once more. This undoubtedly shows that people still have a hard time “digesting” electric cars, despite the fact that the situation has definitely improved when looking at surveys from a few years ago. But what is the reason for this rejection? VZR’s research explains that the primary problem is the continuous elimination of state incentives and bonuses, which certainly provided serious discounts to those who bought a new electric car. If the prices of electric cars do not come down and the subsidies are removed, then the sales of electric cars might fall drastically. As a second negative, several people named the moderate autonomy. Despite the increasing number of electric charging points across Europe, many people fear being left on the side of the road with a dead battery. Many people mention the charging time as a third disadvantage, which is 20-30 minutes in the case of fast charging, and several hours for those who cannot fast charge or do not have charging facilities at home.
