Why are accordion players dying out?

The musicians of accordion (Dah Ghade Baja), the key instrument in Pashto music, are now extinct and now only two musicians are left after the famous accordion player Ghulam Ali.

Among these two musicians, Iqbal Hussain from Akora Khattak while talking to Independent Urdu said that accordion players are decreasing in the whole of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa and at present only two musicians are playing accordion, one of them is Sajjad Ustad of Pusharu and the other. Iqbal Hussain is from Akora Khattak.

He said that I have been playing the accordion for the last 30 years which we call ‘Dah Ghade Baja’ in Pashto and cordian in English while we simply call it accordion.

Iqbal Hussain said that ‘Accordion is different from other musical instruments because it has an upper and lower tone, which is called a double tone, and one tone plays six notes, while the rest of the instruments have two notes.’

Iqbal Hussain said that playing the accordion requires passion and time and it takes a long time to learn.

According to Iqbal Hussain, all the accordions here have been brought from Germany and are still being brought.

The price of an accordion which used to be 30,000 is now 80,000.

Iqbal Hussain says that he has done many music programs through the accordion, ‘All the famous Pashto singers call me to play the accordion and Army, radio stations, Radio Pakistan also call me to play the accordion in various programs. ‘

Ghulam Ali Ustad used to play the accordion in the music of the famous Pashto songs ‘Rasha Janana’ and ‘Rawara Bande Bande’. ‘
