Reuters, citing data from research company IDC, reports that Apple has lost its leadership in global smartphone sales to South Korean Samsung.
In the final quarter of 2023, iPhone sales surged and Apple overtook Samsung to become the world’s No. 1 phone maker. But in the first quarter of 2024, there was a sharp decline in iPhone sales, and Samsung once more became the leader. In the first three months of the year, the South Korean company’s share of the global market reached 20.8%. Apple accounted for 17.3% of global smartphone sales. In third place is the Chinese Xiaomi with a market share of 14.1%.
One of the reasons for the decline in sales is the US-China trade war. China actively prohibits government employees from using American smartphones. However, from a marketing point of view, this is not very good news for Samsung. The fact is that Americans have high consumer patriotism – the desire to support their own manufacturer.
For example, in the 90s, Japanese automakers underestimated sales figures so as not to displace the United States from the first place in the ranking of countries in terms of the number of cars produced. The publication of such data might lead to the fact that Americans would begin to consciously abandon Japanese cars. Something similar might happen with phones.
