Why a Red Dead Redemption remaster is off the table

Rockstar Games had obviously planned to remaster two of its gems: GTA IV and Red Dead Redemption. The failure of GTA Trilogy Definitive Edition has sealed this ambition.

A few months ago, Rockstar Games launched Grand Theft Auto: The Trilogy – The Definitive Editioncompilation bringing together Grand Theft Auto III, Grand Theft Auto: Vice City et Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas in remastered versions. It was a fiasco: players hated (and showed it) and the studio apologized. The failure is such that it would have buried any hope of seeing other old games revived, according to un article de Kotaku published on July 5.

Unaccustomed to failure, Rockstar Games had a priori planned to restore color to Grand Theft Auto IV (released in 2008 on PS3, Xbox 360 and PC) and Red Dead Redemption (released in 2010 on PS3 and Xbox 360). It would no longer be a priority for the company, scalded by feedback on Grand Theft Auto: The Trilogy – The Definitive Editionand more motivated by the idea of developing GTA VI — formalized last February and already eagerly awaited.

Rockstar Games looks more forward than backward

Kotaku actually corroborated a first hallway noise signed Tez, insider related to the GTA franchise. In a tweet posted on July 4the person concerned said: According to a reliable source who is aware of Rockstar’s plans, remasters of GTA IV and Red Dead Redemption had been planned for a few years, but Rockstar Games has decided to revise their plans. The reception of GTA Trilogy Definitive Edition could be the reason behind this decision. »

The media therefore questioned its own sources to confirm this rumor. Rockstar Games hopes gamers will eventually forget GTA Trilogy Definitive Editionknowing that a GTA VI as successful as GTA V could help draw a line under the failed trilogy. Remasterings of Grand Theft Auto IV et Red Dead Redemption could still be marketed, but much later than what was initially planned.

Interestingly, Rockstar Games prefers to look to the future (GTA VI) than relying on relics of the past. This is rather excellent news, even if some PC users were hoping for this remastering to finally have the opportunity to experience the cowboy game.
