Whooping cough is making a worrying comeback in France. Since the beginning of the year, health authorities have noted an unprecedented increase in cases of the infectious disease. “We knew it was coming back, but we didn’t expect it to come back so violently,” insists Professor Sylvain Brice, director of the National Pertussis Reference Center at the Pasteur Institute. “Since January, France has recorded around 35,000 cases. This is a level we haven’t seen in more than 30 years.”
This resurgence was expected. “Every three to five years, a wave occurs. We should have had this new peak around 2022, but the necessary barrier measures against the coronavirus delayed the cycle,” he explained. France is not an isolated case. In June 2024, the French Public Health Agency confirmed that a whooping cough outbreak was affecting several European countries.
