Whooping cough in class? Only those who have been vaccinated are allowed to go to school, the hygienists reminded

The hygiene station of the capital city of Prague reminded that an epidemiological investigation is carried out for every case of whooping cough.

One of the measures in collective facilities such as schools or nurseries is that unvaccinated or incompletely vaccinated children are not accepted from the day the sick child is removed from the collective for a maximum incubation period of 21 days.

“This means that if there is a case of whooping cough in the classroom, only children who are properly vaccinated can enter the facility,” hygienists said. Vaccination checks are carried out by the staff of the hygiene station.

Schools already practice this

Prague schools have already started putting the recommendations into practice. “Dear parents, due to the significant increase in the incidence of whooping cough, we were recommended by the Hygiene Station hl. of Prague, to find out in advance whether our pupils are vaccinated,” reads the letter received by the parents of an elementary school in Prague’s Střešovice.

“In the event of whooping cough at our school, only students who are properly vaccinated will attend school. Unvaccinated pupils are not accepted for 21 days, which is the maximum incubation period of the disease. Based on experience from nearby schools, hygiene also requires the pediatrician’s name and address,” the announcement reads.

The school assures that personal information about vaccinations and the practitioner will be stored in the director’s office and will be shredded after the measures are over.

How exactly classes will be provided for those who will have to stay at home for three weeks is not yet clear. No one has information. However, it can be expected that there will be a minimum of such children, as vaccination is mandatory. Not only elementary schools, but also secondary schools and gymnasiums received recommendations this week.

“I assume that hygiene will issue some recommendations,” Renata Schejbalová, director of Na Zatlance grammar school, told Novinka.

Young unvaccinated children are especially at risk of a serious course of the disease. As the amount of protective antibodies decreases during life, even adults can get sick. For example, the mayor of Prague, Bohuslav Svoboda, announced the infection.

Doctors recommend getting revaccinated with the combined vaccine against tetanus, pertussis and diphtheria during regular tetanus vaccination.

By Wednesday, 2,750 people had been infected throughout the country. According to the Ministry of Health, there are enough vaccines.
