A record £2.36 billion was spent by Premier League clubs in the 2023 summer transfer window. They now have to wait until January to add to their squads, and the spending is expected to continue ahead of the second half of the campaign.
Here is a look at some of the best deals from the summer transfer window.
Manchester City Add to Treble Winning Squad
After losing İlkay Gündoğan and Riyad Mahrez over the summer, Pep Guardiola’s priority this summer was to bring in some midfielders. He will be delighted that he was able to sign Mateo Kovacic and Matheus Nunes from Chelsea and Wolverhampton Wanderers respectively. Both players know the Premier League very well.
Manchester City is the +300 favorite in the football odds to defend their Champions League crown this season, and with Kovacic and Nunes they have two players who can make a real difference in that European competition.
City is also the -150 favorite in Premier League winner odds, which reflects the business they have done this summer. Their squad is strong enough to allow them to compete in all four competitions.
Manchester United Do Late Transfer Activity
Manchester United was one of the busiest teams in the Premier League in the last few days of the transfer window. They brought in goalkeeper Altay Bayindir, defender Sergio Reguilon, and midfielder Sofyan Amrabat on the final day. There was also a deal for their former centre-back Jonny Evans who signed until the end of the season.
Bayindir will back up Andre Onana who joined United earlier in the summer from Inter Milan. He will become the first Turkish player to feature for the club.
Reguilon arrives at United on loan from Tottenham. Erik ten Hag was desperate to add a left back to his squad due to Luke Shaw’s injury. The Spurs man will fit into his style of play. There was also a loan deal for Amrabat from Fiorentina, but United have the option to make that deal permanent next summer should he impress at Old Trafford.
Chelsea Among Top Spenders Again
Since Todd Boehly became the new Chelsea owner in May 2022, he has spent over £1 billion on players at the club. The Blues once once more were among the top spenders in the latest window. One of their standout signings was striker Christopher Nkunku from German club RB Leipzig. Unfortunately for Chelsea fans, they are going to have to wait a little longer to see him in action as he has picked up an injury that rules him out of action for the opening stages of the season.
Chelsea was able to free up some of their highest-paid players during the summer which gave them space in their squad. Kalidou Koulibaly, Edouard Mendy, N’Golo Kante, Cesar Azpilicueta, and Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang were among those to depart.
With the transfer window now closed, all 20 Premier League clubs will be hoping their new signings can help them make a good start to their league campaign in what is set to be a busy schedule for those clubs over the next few months.
