Iron deficiency, with or without anemia, is not uncommon. It affects approximately one in 5 women of childbearing age. Who should be supplemented and how?

Iron is an essential mineral for the human body because it is involved in many functions of the body. Its best-known role is that it plays in the production of hemoglobin, this protein present in red blood cells which helps transport the oxygen essential to all our organs. But who should be supplemented, and how?

Iron deficiency can lead to anemia, a condition in which the body does not produce enough hemoglobin, limiting the ability of red blood cells to carry oxygenated blood throughout the body. This is called iron deficiency anemia. The hemoglobin level allows us to validate that we are indeed facing anemia and that of ferritin, which reflects the body’s iron reserves, that it is due to an iron deficiency. But you should know that you can have insufficient iron reserves without being anemic.
