TEDROS Adhanom Ghebreyesus, Director-General of the World Health Organization (WHO), said at X that a WHO team successfully reached al-Shifa Hospital in northern Gaza to “assess progress in restoring emergency care and ongoing services at the hemodialysis unit.”
Tedros shared a video showing the progress of the rehabilitation efforts.
“Here, in the old outpatient department, where a local medical initiative is underway to revive the care facility
In the video, Dr. Marwaan Abu Saadah, the hospital’s Managing Director, said he hoped al-Shifa’s new emergency department would be ready to receive patients within two weeks.
Repairs were progressing well, Tedros said. But he added: “Hospitals are short of specialist personnel, medical supplies and equipment. WHO and partners are working to deploy international medical teams and mobilize medical and surgical supplies.”
Al-Shifa Hospital has been the target of several attacks and raids by Israeli forces since the war on Gaza began last October.
Most recently, in late March, the military carried out a two-week raid on the medical compound, leaving behind destruction and bodies. (Al Jazeera/Z-3)
