(Berlin = Yonhap News) Correspondent Lee Yul = The World Health Organization (WHO) announced on the 5th (local time) that as of the 5th (local time), 780 cases of monkeypox infection have been confirmed in 27 countries in non-endemic areas.
According to the AFP news agency, the WHO announced the statistics of the confirmed cases and predicted that there is a high possibility of further spread to other countries.
In terms of the number of confirmed cases by region, the UK had the most with 207, followed by Spain (156), Portugal (138), Canada (58) and Germany (57).
Aside from Europe and North America, single-digit cases were reported in Argentina, Australia, Morocco and the United Arab Emirates (UAE), the WHO said.
Monkey smallpox, similar in symptoms to smallpox, is a virus endemic to Central and West Africa.
However, since the case of infection in the UK on the 7th of last month, confirmed cases have occurred one following another in Europe, the Americas, the Middle East, and Australia, raising concerns regarding another global health crisis amid the novel coronavirus infection (COVID-19). So far, cases of infection are prominent among men who have sex with the same sex.
“The overall public health risk is currently low,” the WHO said.
“Currently, the risk to global public health is moderate,” he said.
Monkey smallpox is generally not known to have a high fatality rate. In actual non-endemic areas, no deaths have been reported yet.
