This Tuesday, March 7, the Government of El Salvador confirmed that Wilmer Alexander Segovia Telles (alias “El Explosivo”), an alleged gang member of the Mara Salvatrucha MS-13, had been sentenced to 1,310 years in prison. The war once morest criminal groups has been one of the ‘flag’ of President Nayib Bukele since he took office and just before one year has passed since the state of emergency came into force.
“The gang members who have caused so much pain and tears to the Salvadoran people are not going to leave. They will remain locked up until they pay for each of their crimes. We will take care of that,” Attorney General Rodrigo Delgado said on his Twitter account. That same day, the official pointed out that another individual received 945 years in prison for similar acts.
“Miguel Angel Portillo, homeboy from the same MS program, he was also found guilty of committing 22 homicides, 4 propositions to commit murder, 1 attempted homicide, and extortion,” Delgado stressed. The authorities detailed that these two subjects were part of the ‘Los Angeles’ clique, and that they operated in the four departments of the eastern area.
Similar sentences in El Salvador
This same week it was learned that alias Chimbolo had been sentenced to 168 years in prison for five homicides, conspiracy and proposition to commit an aggravated homicide and connection to terrorist organizations. The sentences confirmed on that day are added to others announced on Thursday, March 2.
That day, the Public Ministry explained that Darwin Ernesto Jiménez Flores, who received 254 years in prison for “11 cases of extortion, terrorist organizations and two cases of proposition and conspiracy to commit aggravated homicide (…) is one of those sentenced. In addition, four national ranflers from the eastern zone were sentenced to 14, 64, and 74 years in prison,” said an official statement.
The crimes related to these subjects would have taken place between 2002 and 2019 and the San Miguel Specialized Sentencing Court determined that the arguments and evidence presented confirmed the commission of the facts.
Transfers to maximum security prison
“Until we know that we have captured the last of the gang members in Salvadoran territory, we are not going to deactivate the protocol,” said the head of that portfolio to the chain. TCSin statements collected by Europa Press.
Last month the first 2,000 suspected gang members were transferred to the Terrorism Confinement Center; a prison that, according to official estimates, has a capacity for 40,000 inmates. In addition, it is equipped with high technology to expand the monitoring of inmates.
The state of emergency was put into effect at the end of March of last year and gives free rein to arrests without a warrant. This was launched in response to an increase in homicides in the nation that claimed the lives of 87 people from the 25th to the 27th of the month in question.
This measure and, in general, the security policies of Nayib Bukele have fueled tensions between the Government of El Salvador and, recently, that of Colombia.
