Who is responsible for the high prices of meat, vegetables and fruits?

With the skyrocketing prices of meat, vegetables and fruits, professionals in the sector have pointed the finger at speculators and “shawkers” as being responsible for the recent record-breaking prices, with the increase exceeding 70% of their real price.

Professionals pointed out that the concerned authorities did not take the necessary measures to deter these violations, which contributed to the aggravation of the situation.

A reliable source confirmed to the newspaper “Sabah” that the main responsibility for the revival of the activities of the conflicting parties lies with the Ministry of Agriculture and Fisheries as the authority supervising the sector, in addition to the Ministry of Interior, which bears the responsibility for monitoring and controlling prices, and the Public Prosecution, which is supposed to take strict measures to prosecute those involved in these violations.

Professionals believe that “shanaka” exploit the ambiguity in the path of products between the producer and the consumer, which leads to a significant increase in prices in the market.

They pointed out that these routes are not adequately monitored, and there are no institutions that effectively track them, which opens the door for manipulators to take advantage of the chaos and impose unjustified prices on citizens.

This comes at a time when Moroccan markets are witnessing increasing pressure on citizens due to the ongoing high prices, as providing basic materials has become a great burden on families, which calls for urgent intervention by the concerned authorities to put an end to these practices and control prices in the markets.
