Leandro Zdero was crowned this Sunday as the new governor of the province of Chaco. The leader of radical origin managed to end more than 15 years of Peronist hegemony, hand in hand with Jorge Capitanich.
In this way, Together for Change added a new victory, in the midst of the decline in the voting power of the Chaco Front.
Zdero was a tightrope walker in the national internalwithout showing in depth with Patricia Bullrich, the sector of Together for Change in which the governor of Corrientes, Gustavo Valdés, moves, which is a strong regional support. Zdero considers the Corrientes radical “a great governor” and claims to have “an excellent relationship” with him.
In the Corrientes ruling party they point out that Zdero “plays with Gustavo” and that the Corrientes president supported him throughout the campaign. Buenos Aires sources from Together for Change also define Zdero as “very close” to Valdés.
The Chaco internship of Together for Change ended without serious consequences. Zdero defeated Polini in the PASO, a man from the sector of the radical former governor Ángel Rozas. A source from the provincial opposition alliance says that “Within an hour” of knowing that Zdero had won the June 18 election, the two sides began to “work together.” As part of this coexistence, the sectors had agreed on the national candidacies (parlasur deputies and legislators), so they avoided a strong duel beyond the one they carried out within the provincial borders.
Zdero is a provincial deputy. He was also secretary of the legislative block. And in his political career he already had another electoral fight with Capitanich: in 2015, he fell to the governor in the election for mayor of Resistencia. In 2019, Zdero tried once more to win the elections for that position, but lost to Gustavo Martínez, the current communal chief, who was also a candidate for governor in Sunday’s elections.
In addition to his attempts to win the mayoralty of Resistencia, The radical Zdero was a trusted official of former mayor Aída Ayala (Together for Change). He was his Chief of Staff and also held the position of Secretary of the Government. During Mauricio Macri’s national administration, Zdero was head of the Anses Northeast Regional Office. The Chaco ruling party criticized him during the campaign, accusing him of cutting non-contributory pensions during his tenure. With the legend “Return the pensions”, many of his posters on public roads in Resistencia were ruined.
The electoral debacle of a worn-out Capitanich, with the Cecilia Strzyzowski case as a key factor in his defeat in the PASO, created a space that Zdero took advantage of to gain support. Even the victim’s mother, Gloria Romero, asked for a vote for the opponent.
The dispute with the Chaco Front was harsh. The radical’s closing campaign caravan on Thursday was intercepted by groups of Capitanich militants in one section, although it did not go any further. Zdero later said that the ruling party had repeated this display throughout the route, with “a shock group.”
Born in Quitilipi, 145 kilometers from Resistencia, Zdero is 52 years old. He is an architect and university professor at the Faculty of Architecture and Urban Planning of the National University of the Northeast (UNNE). He participated in university political life as a student advisor and president of the Student Center.
