In 2023, 33 million individuals or legal owners were subject to property tax. This year, the 2024 property tax notices are sent from this Wednesday, August 28, 2024.

As an individual, you must pay property tax if you are owner or usufructuarythat is to say the right to enjoy a property without owning it, of housing on January 1.

Note that you must pay this tax even if your accommodation is rented.

What properties?

Properties meeting the following two criteria are subject to this tax:

  • be fixed to the ground (caravans are exempt from property tax);
  • present the character of a real building.

Here is some examples of real estate affected by property tax:

  • house or apartment,
  • parking,
  • ground of buildings and land forming an essential and immediate dependency of a construction,
  • boat used at a fixed point and fitted out for housing, commerce or industry,
  • commercial, industrial or professional building,
  • industrial or commercial installation (hangar, workshop, cellar, etc.),
  • land for commercial or industrial use or used, under certain conditions, for advertising.

Reminder of the schedule for sending property tax notices

As a reminder, property tax notices are available from August 28, 2024 if you have chosen the online option and you are not paying monthly. If you are paying monthly, you will be able to consult the notice from September 20.

On the other hand, if you still wish to receive the notice by mail, it will be sent by post between August 28 and September 20 if you are not paid monthly.
It will be between September 23 and October 9 if you are paid monthly.

You will have until October 20 to pay the tax online. Otherwise, the date is brought forward to the 15th of the same month.

An increase this year

Property tax will increase again this year a minima of 3.9%. A basic increase for all taxpayers to which certain municipalities can add an increase at the local level.

So some owners will face much higher increases. In Nice, for example, property tax has increased by 19.2% this year.
