The World Health Organization (WHO) said on Wednesday it had stepped up its response to curb the transmission of cholera in Somalia.
“WHO and its health partners have stepped up the implementation of their cholera response plans in Kismayo, Beled Hawo and other drought-affected districts,” WHO said in its latest update. on the water-borne disease, adding that 4,032 suspected cases of cholera, including 15 deaths, had been reported in 26 Somali districts since January.
The current cholera epidemic is unfolding once morest the backdrop of other epidemics, high rates of malnutrition and worsening drought. These factors all contribute to weakening the humanitarian situation in Somalia, and have already led to significant population displacements, according to the UN health agency.
According to the WHO, Somalia has seen uninterrupted transmission of cholera in 26 drought-affected districts since 2022, and in the Banaadir region since the 2017 drought.
