WHO Donates Essential Medicines to Zimbabwe to Combat Cholera Epidemic

HARARE, Dec. 5 (Xinhua) — The World Health Organization (WHO) on Tuesday donated an assortment of commodities and medicines to Zimbabwe to help in its fight once morest cholera.

Matshidiso Moeti, WHO regional director for Africa, handed over the batch of materials to Zimbabwe’s Minister of Health and Child Protection, Douglas Mombeshora, expressing WHO’s “desire” to end the epidemic by providing essential medicines and necessary diagnostic kits before “mass population displacements begin at Christmas”.

“We all need to redouble our efforts, mobilize the community and bring them to the treatment centers, so that they receive the life-saving treatment,” Mr Moeti said.

“This epidemic must end as quickly as possible,” said Mr. Mombeshora, adding that “this donation will have a considerable impact.”

The water crisis that hampered the fight once morest cholera in the high-density Harare suburb of Kuwadzana, the epicenter of the outbreak, had been resolved, he added.

According to the Ministry of Health and Child Welfare, Zimbabwe had recorded 9,895 suspected cases of cholera as of November 30, 9,466 recoveries and 53 confirmed deaths. END
