The World Health Organization said, on Friday, that the Corona epidemic no longer represents a global health emergency, which is a major step towards ending the pandemic that has claimed more than 6.9 million lives and greatly disrupted the global economy.

“Yesterday, the Emergency Committee met for the 15th time and recommended that I declare an end to the public health emergency of international concern,” WHO Director-General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus said in a tweet on Friday.

“Therefore, with great hope, I declare that COVID-19 has ended, as a global health emergency,” he continued.

It is noteworthy that the Emergency Committee of the World Health Organization announced for the first time that Corona requires the highest level of preparedness, as it is a global epidemic, on January 30, 2020.

Declaring the maximum alert level usually helps focus international attention on any health threat, as well as boosting cooperation on vaccines and treatments.

The World Health Organization said that its lifting of the global emergency is a sign of the progress the world has made in this field.

The death rate from coronavirus has slowed from a peak of more than 100,000 people per week in January 2021 to just over 3,500 in the week ending April 24, according to WHO data.

“However, this does not mean that COVID-19 is gone as a health threat,” Ghebreyesus said.

Last year, US President Joe Biden said the pandemic was over.

And like a number of other countries, the world’s largest economy has begun to dismantle the domestic emergency of the Corona epidemic.
