Who benefits from the mess? – MALI24

This is the question we finally ask ourselves. Because despite many actions aimed at improving the living environment of the populations, the efficient management of this landfill remains a real challenge. Even for the good wills who end up seeing their efforts fall into the water.

Bamako, in particular commune 4 of the district, was marred this Monday morning by a controversy that caused a flame at the Lafiabougou landfill called ”Kilimandiaro”. Sky covered in black smoke, rubbish dumped indiscriminately, creating an unprecedented traffic jam. Difficult to describe this scene having contributed to further pollute an already nauseating environment for years.

According to the information, everything started from the fact that the collective of local residents, made up of young people from the neighborhood, opposed the dumping of garbage by the GIEs at the level of the landfill where the An Bi Ko Movement is currently working, which is in the dynamics of to remove waste which is a source of many diseases. A decision seen as a bad one by agents of the GIEs who would have informed themselves to transport, voluntarily or by force, the garbage to the site in question.

Forewarned is forearmed. Having learned of this project from the GIEs, the community of local residents decided to keep an eye out. Except that the GIEs did not want to postpone their decision since they no longer know where to send the garbage, according to witnesses on the spot. Against all expectations, the situation immediately degenerated following insults and provocations emanating from both sides. Hence the intervention of the police, who tried to disperse the protagonists with tear gas. But difficult to specify the source of the fire even which would be caused by the jets of gas.

Indeed, this unfortunate incident continues to raise questions: who benefits from this mess? is it the efficient management of this discharge is for tomorrow? Are we politicizing this problem? These questions are worth asking today. And for good reason, the good management of this transit depot is slow to become a reality despite the many steps taken by the various regimes which have been supported by goodwill. But who end up giving up. While the local populations continue to suffer the consequences.
