Mr. A, a human resources manager at a domestic information technology (IT) company, was surprised while reviewing job resumes. Some applicants submitted photos created through an artificial intelligence (AI) profile app. Executives and employees who saw unrealistic photos that looked like cartoon characters even wondered if the applicant was playing a prank. Mr. A pointed out, “They say it is popular to create ‘AI profiles’ among young people, but on the other hand, it seems like they look down on companies.”

Companies are having a hard time with applicants using AI profiles on their job resumes. Human resources managers at major companies are having a hard time screening AI profile photos. Job seekers are responding by saying that a profile photo using AI is better than an insincere ID photo.

According to the IT industry on the 12th, there are a total of four types of representative AI profile apps that are popular these days. These include Naver affiliates’ ‘Snow’ and ‘Line’, Kakao’s ‘Be Discover’, and Faradot’s ‘Carat’. When users attach 1 to 20 personal photos to the app, AI creates the images. Approximately 30 ID photos of different appearances, including faces with makeup and various hair styles and clothes, are created.

If you take a profile photo at a regular photo studio, it costs between 50,000 and 200,000 won. You must prepare separate clothing, facial makeup and hair grooming, etc. However, AI profiles are available for 1,900 to 10,000 won.

AI profiles are spreading like a game among the MZ generation (Millennials + Generation Z) to the point where they even require social media authentication. The industry estimated that Naver generated sales of approximately 15 billion won in the two months following the launch of AI Profile in May. Naver said, “Snow sales increased 36.1% compared to the same period last year thanks to AI profiles, etc.”

Overly retouched photos have been a constant source of controversy in the job market. Saramin, an employment information company, conducted a survey of 383 companies in 2019 and found that 4 out of 10 (38.1%) responded that ‘excessively retouched photos are evaluated negatively.’

Some job seekers believe that there is no problem with AI profile photos because regular photo studio profile photos also go through a retouching stage. Kim Yun-hee (26), a graduate student, said, “I think a more outstanding appearance will be advantageous in passing the document screening,” and added, “There is actually no big difference from the existing Photoshop correction.”

The Ministry of the Interior and Safety announced in June that “AI profile photos that are difficult to verify identity cannot be used on ID cards.”

He also advised local governments to strictly apply photo standards to prevent retouched photos that are difficult to verify identity from being used on resident registration cards.
