The Fire Department in the US capital, Washington, said that a white powder was found inside the White House late at night from Sunday to Monday, and led to the temporary closure of part of the presidential complex.

Two informed officials confirmed to the Washington Post that the substance found in the White House was cocaine.

The United States Secret Service also confirmed to Archyde.com that an “unidentified substance” had sealed part of the White House, but referred other questions to the Fire Department, which declined to comment.

“Late Sunday night, the White House complex was closed precautionally while Secret Service agents were examining an unknown substance found within a work area,” a Secret Service spokesperson said in an emailed statement.

The spokesman added that the material was found in the western wing of the White House, which includes the executive residence in which US President Joe Biden lives, the Oval Office, a conference room and a press conference area, in addition to offices and workspaces for advisers and presidential staff.

Biden was not in the White House when the substance was found. Hundreds work in or pass through the West Wing regularly.

The Secret Service said the D.C. Fire Department was contacted for an evaluation and quickly determined the substance to be non-hazardous.

The spokesperson said that an “investigation has been conducted into the cause and manner” of the substance’s entry into the White House, without elaborating.
