White House Homeland Security Response to ICJ Order: Provisional Measures and Bilateral Relations

“These are only provisional measures. We will have to see how the process develops, But it’s hard to see that this alone is going to change our approach.”said White House Homeland Security spokesman John Kirby in a press conference.

On the other hand, Kirby recalled that Washington has promoted humanitarian pauses in the fighting both to remove the hostages from the Gaza Strip and for the entry of humanitarian aid. “We do not believe that a general ceasefire is the best solution at this time,” he stressed.

Likewise, he indicated that the ICJ order is “consistent” with many of the positions held by the Biden Administration, such as the obligation that Israel has to be conscious of reducing civilian casualties or helping the international community to provide humanitarian aid. .

On the other hand, he stressed that South Africa’s claim before the ICJ does not cause “permanent damage” to bilateral relations with this African country.

“We simply do not agree on that point, but we are also going to continue working on that relationship as we do with other countries”he asserted.

In that sense, he said that he does not think that the lawsuit “targeted the United States.”

“We have simply said that this request is unfounded”he pointed out, adding that the court “has not declared that Israel is guilty of genocide” and that they “have not seen such crimes” committed by their ally in the Palestinian enclave.
