The White House on Wednesday denied that there was a plan to “cover up” a possible deterioration in the health of US President Joe Biden, who last Sunday decided to end his campaign for the elections next November.
“It’s not a cover-up. I know that’s the narrative you want, but it’s not,” spokeswoman Karine Jean-Pierre said at a news conference.
The conservative Fox News network has pushed the theory that the government has hidden the decline of Biden, who at 81 is the oldest president in US history.
However, it is not just Fox News that has addressed this issue. New York Magazine has published several articles in recent months about the president’s deterioration, including one in early July titled “The conspiracy of silence to protect Joe Biden.”
The New York Times also published an article earlier this month in which it said that several officials, as well as others who spoke with Biden privately, noticed that he seemed increasingly confused and even lost the thread of conversations.
Doubts about Biden’s age and ability intensified after his poor performance in the debate on June 27 against former President Donald Trump (2017-2021), where he projected an aged image, with a hoarse voice and difficulty finishing some sentences.
Following that meeting, a rebellion broke out within the Democratic Party, with dozens of members of Congress urging him to end his reelection campaign, which he ultimately did on Sunday, while throwing his support behind Vice President Kamala Harris.
Harris has already mathematically gathered the necessary support for the Democratic delegates to officially designate her as the presidential candidate, without any competition.
