Science is progressing in many fields, but it is clear that some of them arouse curiosity better. This is the case of this study which could well change the lives of future generations.

Less gray hair on your head

American scientists have discovered a method to prevent hair from turning gray, a recurring “problem” that everyone knows, or will know at some point in their life, but which sometimes causes us an “aesthetic” concern.

New York researchers have discovered that specific stem cellsknown as melanocyte stem cells, had the unique ability to move between growth compartments in hair follicles, where each hair grows.

However, they also discovered that as hair ages, falls out and regrows, more and more of these stem cells become trapped in a compartment called the hair follicle prominence. For this reason, these hairs remain in the protuberance and do not return to their original place in the compartment, where proteins would have helped them to regenerate into pigment cells, thus preserving their color.

The study, conducted by researchers at NYU Grossman School of Medicine, looked at the physically aged hair of mice and observed that more stem cells remained trapped after forced aging. These cells are also unable to regenerate into hair producing pigmentation, in order to maintain their color.

Scientists are optimistic that their research may pave the way to solutions for maintaining hair health and color well into old age.

The study focused on melanocyte strains, which both mice and humans carry and are responsible for hair color. The NYU team determined that the melanocytic strains were adaptable, meaning they continuously move along the maturity axis as they move between compartments of the developing hair follicle, where they encounter varying levels of protein signals influencing maturity.

The study found that as hair ages, an increasing number of melanocyte strains get trapped in the hair follicle prominence, unable to mature to the state of transit amplification or to return to their original location in the germinal compartment. The proteins in this compartment help them regenerate into pigment cells.

The researchers note that the adaptability of melanocyte stem cells is not present in other self-regenerating stem cells, such as those that make up the hair follicle itself. These cells only move in one direction along an established timeline as they mature. This partly explains why hair can continue to grow even when its color fades.

Our study adds to our knowledge of the functioning of these cells, in order to color the hair again.

Qi Sun, the researcher leading the project announced that their experiments could allow the same to be done on human subjects, without any risk.. Scientific advances could well lead to new discoveries in the coming years, or even months, for this kind of study.
