The whistleblower who leaked the Panama Papers to the Süddeutsche Zeitung in 2016 is demanding 14.5 million euros from the German police. The German police would have brokered a reward of millions of euros for the whistleblower.
This has emerged from newly released information regarding the global tax evasion scandal. The whistleblower is known as John Doe because he has always remained anonymous.
According to a 2017 document published by the German medium on Saturday Welt was published, the unnamed whistleblower would receive a 10 percent commission once $50 million in tax revenue was recovered as a result of the revelations.
A spokesman for the German police, which is said to have arranged the deal, confirmed the authenticity of the letter but gave no further details. The German authorities also do not want to say how much extra tax they were able to collect, thanks to the leaked financial information.
The Panama Papers in 2016 caused a global uproar. At the time, numerous documents from a legal service provider from Panama came to light. For example, names of many prominent people who had put their money away in shady ways surfaced.
The Prime Minister of Iceland was even forced to resign. He turned out to have placed millions in family capital with an offshore company. The documents also included the names of numerous companies, including in the Netherlands, that seemed to facilitate tax evasion through letterbox companies.
