How does the NBA Draft work?

To understand who has the best chance of recruiting Victor Wembanyama on June 22, you must first know how the draft works.

The NBA being a closed league, the worst teams of the season have priority over the best picks of the next draft. The first 14 choices will go to the 14 teams that did not qualify for the play-offs.

The exact order will be determined by a draw called lotteryscheduled for May 16.

On that day, the three worst records in the league will each have a 14% chance of getting the first draft pick. Two other teams have more than 10% chance of obtaining it, the fourth worst record (12.5%) and the fifth worst record (10.5%).

Houston, San Antonio, Detroit or Charlotte for Victor Wembanyama?

At the time of the truce for the All-Star Game, four franchises are dropped at the back of the pack:

  • Charlotte (17 wins-43 losses)
  • Detroit (15-44)
  • Saint Anthony (14-45)
  • Houston (13-45)

They have less than 30% of victories and especially between seven and eleven successes behind Orlando, the fifth worst record. Hornets, Pistons, Spurs and Rockets therefore have a good chance of getting the first picks in the next draft.

But everything will depend on the course of the twenty or so matches still on the program for each team.

By April 9, the ranking can still change a lot. Teams may tend to lose some games on purpose to increase the likelihood of being able to attract Victor Wembanyama this summer. Here is how the Frenchman attracts covetousness!

This is especially true since six teams are less than five wins ahead of the Orlando Magic. The Florida franchise is less behind in the play-in where it can qualify for the play-offs, than ahead of Charlotte.

Victor Wembanyama won’t go not go to the Los Angeles Lakers

No team is officially qualified for the NBA play-offs at the time of the All-Star Break. But some of them are very close.

Boston in the East and Denver in the West dominate their respective conferences. The Celtics and Nuggets, like the Milwaukee Bucks, have already passed the 40-win mark this season and are no longer expected to come out of the top 8.

Teams like Philadelphia or Memphis are also well ranked and should still be in the running for the title in April, barring an incredible drop in the standings. So those franchises have little to no chance to go from strength to strength with Victor Wembanyama this summer.

It is even certain for one team in particular: the Los Angeles Lakers.

While the team of LeBron James is virtually not qualified for the play-offs, she should not be able to take advantage of her draft choice this year, especially if she has the first choice.

The New Orleans Pelicans have the opportunity to trade their choice with that of the Lakers thanks to a transfer made in 2019. The greatest hope in planetary basketball therefore should not play with the best scorer in the history of the NBA in 2023 /24.
