Which provinces will have temperatures below normal for winter, according to the SMN

The National Metereological Service (SMN) announced that for the winter of this year they expect temperatures below normal in some provinces. Other regions, on the other hand, will have normal or even higher than average temperatures.

In the provinces of northwestern argentinian (NOA) –Jujuy, Salta, Catamarca, Tucumán, La Rioja and Santiago del Estero– the cold will be stronger than in previous years. On the other hand, in La Pampa, the west of Buenos Aires and the west and south of Patagonia there will be normal temperatures.

following registering the “fifth coldest autumn in the last 62 years”the SMN shared the update of the Quarterly Climate Forecast (PCT) and released the average temperature trend for the quarter of June, July and August 2022.

The SMN reported that, although temperatures in the provinces of the NOA will be on average lower than normal, towards the north and northeast of the country there will be normal or lower than normal values. On the other hand, in Córdoba and the south of the Litoral it is possible that there is a greater probability of temperatures within the average for the season.

Temperature forecast for June, July and August 2022National Metereological Service

As for the Pampa and the west of Buenos Aires, temperatures can be normal or higher than expected, while In western and southern Patagonia, winter can be warmer than historical temperatures recorded.

A greater frequency of extremely low minimum temperatures is likely to be recorded in much of the center and north of the country.

For this quarter it is expected higher chance of below-normal rainfall in the south of Cuyo, La Pampa and Buenos Aires. However, in the Litoral and the north and east of Patagonia there will be normal or lower than normal rainfall.

The region of the NOA and north of Cuyo goes through winter, that is, the dry season. For that reason, the rain that is recorded in the forecast period is usually very little.

”Nationally, the fall of 2022 was the fifth coldest fall in the last 62 years. An autumn so cold has not been recorded since 1976 in Argentinawith a temperature anomaly of -0.8°C”, shared the SMN.

In that sense, he reported that May was “colder than normal in much of the country, especially in the central and northern regions,” where there were very low temperatures, “with records and intense frosts in several provinces of the country.”
