Is there a nutrient that prevents diabetes from developing? A question that researchers from the USA now want the answer to be “yes”. which one is it

Berlin/Boston – Who doesn’t know it? Sugared muesli for breakfast, a piece of cake in the followingnoon, and a hearty bite into chocolate in the evening on the couch. Sugar all day long. Some consumers have far too much of it.

In Germany alone, around 7.2 percent of 18- to 79-year-olds have already suffered from diabetes mellitus. This was the result of estimates by the Robert Koch Institute (RKI).

People also talk regarding diabetes. It means diabetes. A fifth of the population would already show the first symptoms of a preliminary stage of type 2 diabetes, the so-called prediabetes. Prediabetes is caused, among other things, by an unhealthy diet, obesity and lack of exercise. Now a study from the USA comes into play.

Study from the USA “finds” nutrient once morest diabetes – what effect vitamin D can have

Because researchers of Tufts Medical Center in Boston (USA) have discovered that a certain nutrient might prevent prediabetes from becoming diabetes. For this purpose, the researchers evaluated three studies in which the subjects who already suffered from prediabetes were monitored over a period of three years. While one group regularly took vitamin D tablets, the other group only took placebo.

The group, who took vitamin D, only 22.7 percent developed diabetes as a result. In the placebo group, on the other hand, this was the case for 25 percent. Using these numbers, the researchers were then able to determine how simple vitamin D pills might prevent diabetes. The result: Those who took vitamin D were able to reduce the risk of developing diabetes in the future by 15 percent.

In further diabetes studies, the scientists now wanted to investigate how high the daily vitamin D dose must be or whether the vitamin D content in the blood should remain at a certain level over the long term.

Like a drug from the USA, vitamin D can help once morest diabetes. But what is the group of fat-soluble vitamins actually all regarding? It is rarely found in conventional foods, but is formed in the body to around 90 percent as a result of UV radiation.

So when sunlight hits our skin, the body forms the important vitamin from precursors, which is responsible for hardening the bones, among other things. And an adult needs regarding 20 micrograms of vitamin D per day.

Helps once morest diabetes: These foods contain vitamin D

In addition to the sun, these foods are classic suppliers of vitamin D:

  • Oily fish (salmon, herring): It contains up to 20 micrograms of vitamin D per 100 grams.
  • Edible mushrooms (mushrooms, chanterelles) provide regarding 2-6 micrograms of vitamin D per 100 grams.
  • Margarine (2.5 micrograms per 100 grams)
  • egg yolk (5.6 micrograms per 100 grams)
  • beef liver (1.7 micrograms per 100 grams)
