The Russian automobile market is experiencing a boom and in January-April 2024, sales have almost returned to pre-crisis levels, largely due to promotion for Chinese cars. AVTOVAZ also slightly reduced prices by introducing more affordable trim levels, but it nevertheless faced direct competition from foreign cars. Below is a selection of the five most obvious competitors of the Lada Vesta, which now costs 1.5-2.4 million rubles (we are waiting price increases in May). Moreover, AVTOVAZ management has already proposed impose a draconian tax on recycling on the “Chinese”so within a year, Vesta might once once more become uncontested in its price segment.

Lebanon X3 Pro sets the bar

Livan X3 Pro is an urban crossover that can de facto be considered a sedan

The Livan brand has no connection with the Middle Eastern state and belongs to Geely, which bought the remains of the bankrupt Lifan company (at one time very popular in Russia). Livan X3 Pro is a restyling of the Geely Vision X3. This is a mini crossover with a length of only 4005 mm, which is a step more compact than the Kia Soul or Hyundai Creta. In terms of features, it doesn’t compete with the Vesta, but rather with the outgoing Kalina/Granta sedan. The 1.5-liter engine develops 103 hp, but the CVT is already included in the basic configuration, which costs, taking into account a direct discount, 1.559 million rubles, which is almost the same as the base Lada Vesta . At the same time, the equipment of the Livan is richer: it immediately has alloy wheels, a sunroof, leatherette seat trim, ABS, a stabilization system, a multimedia system with 8-inch screen, cruise control and air conditioning. True, heated seats and a number of other options are available in the second configuration, which costs 1.68 million rubles. Vesta offers heated seats in the version for 1.592 million rubles.

Such compact cars are traditionally not in great demand in Russia, and despite the status of the most affordable foreign car, at the end of last year the Livan X3 Pro sold 2.5 thousand units. But everything would have changed if there were no customs duties: in China, a model with CVT costs 68,000 yuan (884,000 rubles), but 646,000 rubles are added at customs. In general, the exorbitant prices of small Chinese cars are explained not even by the greed of dealers, but by the government’s attempts to protect AVTOVAZ and other Russian manufacturers from competition.

Changan Alsvin – analogue of the first Solaris

Changan Alsvin has not yet become a bestseller like Solaris

The Changan Alsvin sedan has been produced in China since 2009, and the second generation dates back to 2012, that is, the model is quite old. True, it was presented to us in a version following the 2018 restyling, and in many respects it is close to the first generation of Hyundai Solaris. Thus, the length of 4.39 meters is only a fraction less than that of the “Korean”.

The car is equipped with a 1.5-liter 98-horsepower engine and a non-reciprocating dual-clutch robotic transmission. The transmission, by the way, is five-speed, which is not typical for this type of gearbox.

But Changan Alsvin is a rare Chinese low-cost airline for Russia: Chinese brands generally avoid bringing us B-class sedans. Taking into account direct advantages, the price starts from 1.65 million rubles. Moreover, in China this version costs half the price: 62,000 yuan or 800,000 rubles. But customs duties alone add 614,000 rubles, and half of those payments are recycling fees, a big increase that AVTOVAZ is pushing for.

But the Alsvin is well equipped from the outset: a stabilization system, air conditioning, a reversing camera, a multimedia system, etc. are already in the database. Despite this, the car has not yet become a bestseller: only 4.2 thousand sedans were sold last year, so it is not a leader even among Changan.

“Moskvich-3” – working on errors

The Russian brand, which produces copies of Chinese JAC at the former Renault factory, faced problems last year with significant overstocking of warehouses and sharply reduced prices for two of its models – “troika” and “six”. At the same time, the price of Moskvich-3 fell by 630 thousand rubles, or by more than a quarter. Now the cost of a crossover produced in 2023 starts from 1.59 million rubles, that of cars of the new year – 1.655 million rubles. Even the most expensive versions of Moskvich in Comfort configuration are much cheaper than the previous base price – 1.865 million rubles.

Moskvich-3 is equipped with a 1.5-liter turbo engine, downgraded to 136 hp last year, and a manual or CVT transmission. But the transmission is front-wheel drive only. The equipment, like that of other Chinacars, is not poor: a stabilization system, sunroof, air conditioning, multimedia and parking sensors are already in the database (but heated seats traditionally start with the second configuration, priced at 1.601 million rubles).

By the way, the price reduction brought results: in April 2024 alone, Moskvich sold 2.2 thousand cars, and since the beginning of the year – almost 7 thousand. For comparison, at the end of last year, 13 thousand cars were sold out of 31 thousand assembled in the capital. Moskvich still has a bias in favor of the “troika”: at the end of April, the second model, Moskvich-6, accounted for only 9% of sales.

Geely Emgrand: back in a new look

Built on the Volvo BMA platform, the new Geely Emgrand debuted last year, and at the beginning of this year the base price fell to 1.85 million rubles, taking into account a discount direct, making it one of the most affordable C+ class sedans (the size of the Toyota Corolla, Skoda Octavia, etc.). The basic version has two airbags, ABS, ESP, air conditioning, multimedia, but on steel rims, with halogen headlights and without heated seats. Engine – 1.5 liters 122 horsepower. For 2.06 million, a version with a six-speed automatic transmission is offered (it has heated seats straight away).

Geely Emgrand surpasses the Lada Vesta in size and competes with premium versions of the regular (non-Cross) sedan, having a similar set of equipment. In China, the model costs regarding 90,000 yuan (1.17 million rubles), but the Russian price is increased by a tax of 757,000 rubles plus increased logistics costs.

Solaris is no longer a Hyundai. The main thing is that he’s back

At the beginning of the year, according to official information, production of four Korean models was resumed at the former Hyundai plant near St. Petersburg – from the remaining vehicle kits. The company now belongs to the Russian group AGR Automotive. The model, which was previously called Hyundai Solaris, is now called Solaris HS and competes with well-equipped versions of the Lada Vesta.

Solaris has very unusual prices, for example, versions with a 1.4 liter or 1.6 liter engine with a manual transmission or CVT cost almost the same: 2.01 – 2.019 million rubles, and even top-of-the-line Elegance trim levels are priced at 2.17 million.

For this money, the Lada Vesta is offered in the Cross version with increased ground clearance, with a 1.8 liter engine and CVT, and in one of the high-end Techno equipment. Considering the small difference between the Solaris trim levels, there is no overall difference from Vesta, but the Russian model is nevertheless equipped a little more luxuriously: for example, it will have a 10-inch multimedia screen and 17-inch lighting. Alloy Wheels. On the other hand, Solaris HS offers a wide range of equipment, including winter options and a stabilization system not available for Vesta, side and curtain airbags, heated rear seats, etc.
