Major League Soccer was born in December 1993, following the Fédération Internationale de Football Association (FIFA) conditioned the United States to do so following awarding it the venue for the 1994 World Cup.

Initially, the MLS had just 10 teams, but now there are 29 teams, not only from the United States but also from Canada. True to American tradition, the league is divided into conferences, in this case two: the Eastern Conference and the Western Conference.

The league is divided into two parts. First is the regular season, in which each team plays 34 rounds. The team with the most points wins the MLS Supporters’ Shield. However, the league does not end there. Subsequently, the seven teams with the most points from each conference qualify for the playoffs.

The first team in the conference advances directly to the semifinals, while the remaining six face each other in knockout rounds and the three winning teams are the remaining semifinalists.

The semifinal winners advance to the final, and the two teams that emerge victorious in their respective conferences face each other to win the MLS Cup and thus determine the league champion.

The two teams that have won the most MLS titles are Los Angeles Galaxy, with five, and DC United, with four.

The top scorers in MLS are: Chris Wondolowski, with 171 goals; Landon Donovan, with 145 goals; Jeff Cunningham, with 134 goals; Jaime Moreno, with 133; and Kei Kamara, with 130.

Meanwhile, the players with the most games played in MLS are: Nick Rimando, with 514; Kyle Beckerman, with 498; Jeff Larentowicz, with 437; Kevin Hartman, with 416; and Chris Wondolowski, with 413.

In recent years, MLS has gained prominence in regional soccer and has even attracted international attention to the sport with the addition of renowned stars to its league. Its games are increasingly being watched outside of the United States.

Throughout its history, legends such as Javier “Chicharito” Hernández, Jorge Campos, David Beckham, Zlatan Ibrahimovic, Cuauhtémoc Blanco, Thierry Henry, Rafael Márquez, David Villa and Frank Lampard have joined the MLS. Currently, there are great footballers in the MLS such as Lionel Messi, Carlos Vela, Luis Suárez, Jordi Alba, Sergio Busquets, Héctor Herrera, Lorenzo Insigne and Giorgio Chiellini.
