Two weeks following the opening of the autumn vaccination campaign once morest Covid-19, on October 2, 4% of people aged 65 and over received a booster dose according to the latest report published on October 18.
A vaccination campaign once morest Covid-19 which is starting smoothly. Since the start of the 2023 fall campaign on October 2, 4% of people aged 65 and over have received a booster dose according to the latest report published on October 18 by Public Health France.
“1.5 million Covid boosters” were carried out “including 75% for vulnerable groups”, underlined the Minister of Health, Aurélien Rousseau on X (ex-Twitter) this Monday, October 23.
This campaign, initially planned for October 17 but brought forward by two weeks due to an increase in cases of contamination during the summer, is mainly aimed at the most vulnerable people, i.e. those aged over 65, suffering from comorbidities, pregnant women, nursing home residents or even people in contact with these fragile people.
Any other person wishing a booster can claim it, provided they respect a deadline of six months following their last injection or Covid infection. Since October 17, it is possible to receive the flu vaccine at the same time.
As for health professionals, 1.3% of those working in Ephad, 2% of liberals and 1.5% of those working in a health establishment received a dose of vaccine.
47% of those aged 65 and over vaccinated in England since September
If Aurélien Rousseau welcomes the “1.5 million reminders”, this is far from reaching the more than 19 million people at risk, counted by the Ministry of Health and Prevention. Note that the 4% of vaccinated among those aged 65 and over does not yet include data on nursing home residents, which will not be communicated until the end of October. The number of people who received a booster dose is therefore probably greater than 4%.
Alongside the vaccination campaign carried out across the Channel since the beginning of September, France seems to be lagging behind. From September 1 to October 15, 46.8% of residents in England aged 65 and over received a booster dose, according to a report from the government agency UK Health Security Agency published on October 19. That’s more than 7 million people.
The English, however, are a month ahead of France, which still has time to hang up the wagons. And hope to do better than the previous spring 2023 campaign reserved for over 80s. 1.7% of them had then received a booster dose, and more than 9.5% of residents in nursing homes. A figure which rises to 28.6% if we count the doses received by this age group between the fall vaccination campaign of 2022 and July 2023.
It is also difficult to know whether this fall vaccination campaign is off to a better or worse start than its predecessor in 2022.
“Comparisons with previous vaccination campaigns once morest Covid-19 are not relevant because these were part of a cycle of vaccines and boosters, while this new campaign begins like that of the flu, in a way seasonal, unrelated to previous doses,” writes France Info.
Indeed, as of October 10, 2022, 82.5% of those aged 65 and over had received their first booster dose. But the counters had not been reset to zero: on January 25, they were already 80.4%.
