avocados in the world

(Bloomberg) — With the closure of imports of avocados from Mexico by the United States due to an alleged threat to one of its inspectors, one may wonder how supermarket shelves will continue to be stocked with one of the consumer’s favorite products. Mexico is by far the world’s largest producer of this fruit, according to data from FAOSTAT, with a production of almost 2.4 million tons in 2020 and 80% of the US market. The next largest producer is Colombia, with 876,754 tons. Analysts at JPMorgan Chase & Co. said there isn’t enough global supply to make up for the loss of Mexican avocados, especially in the short term, meaning U.S. consumers will have to get used to higher prices this time of year for a bit more time.
