Hamas’ horrific massacre of Israeli civilians (men, women, children) can only shock. Nevertheless, the story of this orgy of unbridled hatred does not begin on October 7, 2023. Since the founding of the State of Israel in 1948, the region has never really found peace. Just asking questions regarding the cause of this hatred is walking on thin ice. Weren’t there already promising peace initiatives? How did they all fail? Could a different Israeli policy that also focuses on the needs of the Palestinians have prevented such radicalization?
To what extent has the illegal land grab caused by more and more settlements in the West Bank fueled anger? Is a two-state solution finally off the table? Did the Palestinians feel abandoned by the Arab “brotherly states” and their rapprochement with Israel? Did this promote terrorist organizations like Hamas? Does the liquidation of individual Hamas commanders justify the deaths of many innocent civilians, including children and the sick, in Gaza, often described as the “largest open-air prison in the world”? Shouldn’t a lot more humanitarian aid be allowed there? Given this spiral of violence, how can the increasing anti-Semitism in many parts of the world be countered? What comes following the intended elimination of Hamas? Is peaceful coexistence between Israelis and Palestinians reserved for a future generation? Can questions like these and many others be asked without exposing oneself to accusations of one-sided partisanship or even hateful reactions?
