This day serves as a reminder of the importance of the medical profession and recognition of the hard work of doctors, nurses, paramedics, orderlies and other health care professionals.
History of the holiday and date of celebration
The holiday was created with the aim of honoring medical workers who daily save lives, help the sick and work to improve the health of the population.
In 2023, the Ministry of Health of Ukraine, taking into account the full-scale invasion of Russia on the territory of Ukraine, and requests from the public and medical professionals, initiated an online vote to determine a new date for the celebration of Doctors’ Day. This decision was made in order to avoid any coincidence of holiday dates with the Russian Federation, which harms the civilian population every day.
For many years, the Day of the Medical Worker was celebrated on the third Sunday of June. However, according to Decree of the President of Ukraine “On the Day of Medical Workers” dated June 13, 2023 No. 327/2023, now this holiday will be celebrated annually on July 27.
Values and challenges
Medical workers play a key role in ensuring the health and well-being of society. Their efforts and dedication in fighting diseases and epidemics, providing emergency care, conducting complex operations and supporting patients are irreplaceable. Their role was especially important during the COVID-19 pandemic, when doctors were at the forefront of the fight against the virus, risking their own health.
However, probably one of the biggest challenges was working in wartime conditions. Today, doctors are faced with numerous challenges, have worked and continue to work at the limits of human capabilities. They serve a huge number of victims in need of urgent medical care, often without sufficient supplies, medicines, equipment and even basic infrastructure for rescue. They do their work in dangerous conditions that threaten their life and health.

Despite all the advances in health care, health workers face numerous challenges every day, such as high workloads, insufficient funding and health risks.
Traditions of celebration and greetings
Various events are traditionally held on the Day of the Medical Worker, including awarding the best workers in the field of health care with awards.
In addition, medical conferences and seminars are held. There they discuss the latest achievements in medicine, exchange experience and knowledge in the professional field. And of course, it is important not to forget to congratulate all medical workers and specialists in the field of health care.
