When will the teachers inform the parents of the students about the absences

This year, the data has changed regarding the recording and consequences of student absences, as well as the way parents and guardians are informed.

There is also a whole category of absences for exceptional and special reasons, health and other factors, which are recorded but not counted towards the characterization of attendance.

Now the justification (also by the parents) of certain absences has returned, but they cannot exceed 74 for the whole year.

From there, they are allowed 40 more unexcused absences, but if they exceed 114 in total then they will have to repeat the class.

Absences concern Obligations of teachers and parents regarding student absences

In the Official Gazette 5130/10-9-2024 (article 26) reference is made to the issue of student absences and the obligations of parents/guardians/guardians and teachers

It is pointed out that the regular monitoring of the students’ attendance is entirely the responsibility of their parents/guardians, as well as the person who exercises their supervision.

The teacher in charge of each department, after informing the Principal of the school that the student has already completed twenty-five (25) excused or unjustified absences, is obliged to inform the parents/ guardians exercising custody of the student immediately and to be informed of the reasons for his/her absence by any suitable means, such as by phone call, by e-mail sent from the school’s e-mail address to the e-mail address stated by the parents/guardians/guardians at the school in their relevant responsible statement, or by text message to the mobile phone of the parents/guardians/guardians (SMS), or by letter.

If the student has been absent for three (3) consecutive days, the teacher who is in charge of the department immediately contacts the parents/guardians/the intern in charge of the student (with e-mail, SMS or letter), is informed of the reason for the absences and informs the Principal of the school.

After the first notification of the trainee’s parents/guardians, according to the above, the teacher informs them on the first five (5) working days of each month, if there is a change in the total number of absences.

The parents/guardians/custodians are also informed about any other matter concerning the school situation of the student.

If communication with the parents/guardians/guardians is not possible or if the above refuse communication or if for any other reason it is necessary, the school Principal is informed and the Council is convened of the Department to examine the necessity of using actions of a pedagogical nature, such as indicatively the recourse to supportive educational structures or social services, as well as to examine the necessity of informing the police or other authorities for the implementation of par. 3 of article 2 of Law 1566/ 1985 (A’ 136).

The parent/guardian/custodian of any student who has been absent from school for health reasons for more than two (2) days is obliged to submit, or send electronically no later than the tenth (10) working day from the student’s return to School, a certificate from a public or private nursing institution or any private doctor, certifying the type and duration of the illness. This certificate can serve as a justification for the respective absences.

After the above deadline, no supporting documents submitted after the deadline will be accepted under any circumstances. Each certificate is submitted together with the application and must be entered in the protocol. In order to justify absences of two (2) days due to illness or other serious family reasons, a responsible declaration of the parent/guardian/guardian is sufficient, and it is presented by him/her or sent electronically within an exclusive period of ten (10) working days after the student’s return to School.

In this way, the above persons can justify absences up to 5 (five) days in total for the whole academic year.

Individual or continuous absences of students are not considered justified when they occur without the permission of the Principal or the School during the School’s daily operating schedule.

It is not foreseen to assign work to a student by the Director of the school unit without registering an unjustified absence

When there are repeated absences in the hours of the daily schedule (including the first or last hour), single or continuous, without the permission of the Principal of the school, the reasons are sought and pedagogic actions are carried out depending on the case.

Students who have reached the age of 18 personally fulfill the obligation to notify the reason for their absence.
