The possibility of introducing a new banknote was mentioned at the beginning of 2021 by the President of the National Bank of Poland (NBP), Adam Glapiński. – I think that the next president, and I hope in the next term, but every president who comes will introduce the PLN 1,000 banknote at some point – said the president of the NBP.
The head of the central bank argued that the appearance of a PLN 1,000 banknote would be convenient, for example, for people who keep savings at home. – If someone hides banknotes somewhere in the linen closet and is afraid of what will happen for some reason, it is more convenient to put aside PLN 500 or PLN 1,000 than the same amount in PLN 50 banknotes – explained Glapiński.
The President of the National Bank of Poland even made plans for a female image on the new banknote. His favorite was the Queen of Poland, Jadwiga of Anjou.
What about the PLN 1,000 banknote? NBP comment
The horizon outlined by Glapiński is the years 2022-2028, because this is the period covered by the term of office of the President of the NBP. Let us note, however, that Glapiński could not be sure at that time that he would be elected for another term. Ultimately, in the spring of 2022, this choice was made. It turns out, however, that nothing has happened since then regarding the introduction of the PLN 1,000 banknote and is unlikely to happen in the near future. This is evidenced by a comment sent to “Wprost” by the NBP press office. – We would like to inform you that work on a new circulation banknote has not been and is not ongoing at NBP and there are no such plans – the central bank press office informed our editorial office.
The last new banknote introduced into circulation is the one with a face value of PLN 500. It appeared in February 2021 and has an image of King Jan III Sobieski. Data provided by the NBP show that from February 10, 2017 to the end of 2020, 46,423,515 banknotes with a denomination of PLN 500 were introduced into cash circulation.

Adam Glapiński with a raise. We know how much richer he will get
Poland’s PLN 1,000 Banknote: A Fabulous Idea or Just a Fantastical Fumble?
Well, well, well, if it isn’t Adam Glapiński, the President of the National Bank of Poland, throwing his hat into the ring for the most extravagant yet utterly impractical idea since the invention of the cashmere toilet roll! Yes, folks, we’re talking about a potential PLN 1,000 banknote. Yes, you heard it right—not a thousand of those cheery PLN 50 notes, but one single glorious slip of paper that could carry the weight of your wildest (or weirdest) financial aspirations!
Folding Up Convenience, One Note at a Time
Now, let’s break it down, shall we? Glapiński insists that introducing a PLN 1,000 banknote will be a convenience for those poor souls hoarding their fortunes in a linen closet. “After all, darling,” he quips, “isn’t it easier to tuck away one note than stuff a dozen of those pesky PLN 50 bills?” Well, when he puts it that way, it almost sounds convincing! Did he just discover the art of minimalism, or is he simply trying to make linen closets the new Swiss bank vaults?
And let’s not breeze past his brilliant vision of placing a charming female figure on this splendid new banknote. Cue the romantic sighs as he suggested none other than the illustrious Queen Jadwiga of Anjou. Groundbreaking choice? Absolutely. Just think of it—every time someone pulls out their banknote, not only do they have a grand sum, but they also get a reminder of Poland’s rich history and a little royal flair to boot. Quite the power move!
“It’s Coming, Honestly!” And Other Empty Promises
But hold your horses! Fast forward to 2022, and what do we find? Crickets. A whole lot of nothing. Glapiński, bless him, had laid out a time frame from 2022 to 2028, like a kid promising to clean his room next week. Fast forward to Spring 2022 and—surprise, surprise!—nothing happened. Not even a whisper about our elusive new banknote. In fact, the NBP press office practically giggled its way through a statement saying, “Yeah, we’d like a new banknote too, but it’s not happening.” Ah, the classic ‘We’ll get back to you’ routine!
A Blast from the Past with PLN 500
The last new kid on the block was the PLN 500 banknote introduced in February 2021, featuring King Jan III Sobieski. Talk about a royal upgrade! And here’s a fun fact: over 46 million of these notes were shuffled into circulation. That’s right; 46,423,515 of them! Who knew the King was so popular? Looks like Glapiński is going to have a tough act to follow. Not that he seemed to mind, since it seems the PLN 1,000 is still in the drawing board phase—if it’s even drawn up at all!
In the meantime, keep an eye on your wallet! You never know when your current notes will decide it’s their time to shine—or expire! Better double-check before you attempt to pay for that next Polski lunch, my friends.
Conclusion: A Royal Mess or a Grand Plan?
So, as we raise our glasses to Glapiński’s grand vision of a new banknote, let’s take a moment to appreciate the sheer ridiculousness of it all. Is it a brilliantly convenient idea, or just another example of politicians dreaming big while the rest of us are left counting our change? Only time will tell if we’ll see that shiny PLN 1,000 in our wallets, or if it’ll remain a pipe dream. Until then, let’s enjoy the drama of the central bank—and perhaps hold on to our PLN 500 notes a little tighter!
