In this regard, the hydrologist explained that these works were aimed at improving the water supply in the municipalities of Acevedo, Plaza and Zamora in the state of Miranda.

The other service interruption carried out by the state-owned company was in January to carry out maintenance at the El Guapo treatment plant.

On that occasion, the municipalities of Miranda that were affected were Pedro Gual, Páez, Andrés Bello, Buroz and Brión. He also indicated that these works were to optimize operations and improve the water supply in the Barlovento axis.

Water supply failures

In its 4th Monitoring Report on the complex humanitarian emergency in Venezuela published in January 2024, the non-governmental organization (NGO) Hum Venezuela highlighted that the water crisis worsened in 2023 with a 60% drop in the amount of water distributed, and a 90% drop in the operation of infrastructure, equipment and water quality control systems.

The Hum Venezuela study found that nearly 19.9 million Venezuelans (69.1%) of the population have severe restrictions on access to water. Of this number, 12.4% reported that due to rationing they receive water once a week, while 16.9% spent two months or more without service.

Furthermore, 23.6% of the population is not even connected to the water supply network, mainly in areas with little urban infrastructure.

Due to water shortages, 86% of the population turned to alternative sources, up from 75.9% in 2022. This increase was also reflected in the purchase of bottles (from 41% to 48.9%) or the use of tanker trucks (from 14.7% to 16.9%). Also, the construction of underground wells (from 10.7% to 18.2%), either communal or in private residences.
