Severe psychiatric pathologies in young adults often have deleterious effects on school or university careers. In this context, the Saint-Martin clinic in Vignogoul (Occitanie) has set up Épistémé, a psycho-pedagogical platform that allows young patients to consider school and/or professional remobilization.
In practice, the platform is designed to accommodate approximately 15 to 20 patients suffering from schizophrenia or severe borderline states, stabilized, admitted in full hospitalization or day. Each young person carries out an orientation assessment with the orientation counselor psychologist. He then undertakes to be present three followingnoons a week, over a renewable period of 5 months. Different individual and collective support by a teacher, in the form of workshops and methodology courses are set up, as well as psychological support. A dedicated study room is equipped with IT equipment and educational and methodological tools.
Patrice Charbit, psychiatrist at the initiative of the project, specifies: “The majority of requests concern the preparation of the Diploma of Access to University Studies (DAEU), an equivalent of the baccalaureate, but we also have university courses, technical training… It can also be passing the highway code, writing a book, or getting ready to look for a project. Everything is an opportunity to get going. We organize with the patient the framework of his journey, distance courses if necessary, we frame his personal work, his schedule and his daily support. It is an attentive framework”. Studying becomes care.
Patrice Charbit concludes: “Giving a perspective, conveying it, framing it, even transforming it, all this in a group, is the basis of the epistemic project. Its advantages are many:
– play down the diagnosis of schizophrenia or a serious borderline state and give hope to young people who are starting their adult life;
– bring certain refractory patients into a perspective of care through the door of knowledge;
– rehabilitate an adequate and adapted temporality: it is commonly accepted that training and learning take time, just like healthcare;
– not require a heavy infrastructure and be economical. »
