Lately, Mali has been accused of violating human rights. The accusing fingers are precisely France and Ecuador, which have seized the forum of the United Nations to denounce the human rights situation in Mali. Faced with this posture of these States, the Ambassador Permanent Representative of Mali to the United Nations immediately replied to their allegations which are only intended to defile our country.

In his speech, the Malian diplomat recalled that several paragraphs of the report of the international commission of inquiry on Mali that his French counterpart finds “inaccurate and unfounded”, are devoted to human rights violations against the Malian populations by the French forces. “I would have liked him to tell this Council the efforts they have made to follow up on the two reports that have been published to this effect and to take only these two examples,” he said.

Then, the Malian diplomat indicated having heard other interpellations, in particular that of the representative of Ecuador still on the subject of human rights. For Issa Konfourou, Mali has no lesson to receive from a country like Ecuador which, moreover, is regularly challenged in relation to human rights violations.
This is explained, according to him, by cases of restrictions on freedom of expression, assembly and persecution of journalists by prosecutors and judges which are commonplace in Ecuador. “So not having the selective memory concerning the violations of human rights, they are valid for all of us”, he adds. However, the permanent representative to the United Nations reassured that Mali wishes to work with everyone to improve the human rights situation. But is rather opposed to the politicization and stigmatization of this specific issue.
