What do you do when the holiday connects to Saturday? – Special preparations

This year, Rosh Hashanah 2024 connects to Shabbat, which requires unique preparations, especially when it comes to the laws and preparations related to both Shabbat and Yom Tov.

Mixing dishes: what is it and how do you do it?

When Yom Tov connects to Shabbat, it must be performed Mixing the dishes which enables the preparation of Shabbat food during the second Yom Tov. Place bread and a prepared stew in the kitchen, bless them, and thus you can cook from Yom Tov to Shabbat.

Blessing on the mixing: “Blessed are you, O Lord our God, king of the world, who sanctified us with his commandments and commanded us to perform the mitzvah of Eruv.”

It’s important to know that mixing Tebshilin permits the transfer from the second Yom Tov to Shabbat, but not from the first Yom Tov to the second Yom Tov. It is forbidden to cook or set the table for the meal on the second evening of Rosh Hashanah before the end of the first day, that is, Thursday evening, one to two minutes before the time corresponding to the end of the second Yom Tov on Friday.

Lighting Shabbat and Yom Tov candles

Shabbat and Yom Tov candles must be prepared in advance, and it must be ensured that soul candles or other candles will be lit for the entire time required so that we can transfer fire from an existing fire during the holiday and Shabbat.
The lighting of the candles includes the blessing “to light a candle of Shabbat and Yom Tov.”

Signs of Rosh Hashanah: beyond the apple in honey

Every year, on the night of Rosh Hashanah, it is customary to eat signs – foods that symbolize blessings for the new year. Each sign is accompanied by a special blessing and a deep spiritual meaning. The signs of the holiday are an integral part of the holiday, and accompany the family meal in a spirit of renewal and blessing.

Types of explosions:

  • blast: straight and long voice.
  • fractions: three short blasts.

  • In every synagogue, 30 blasts are blown before the Mossaf prayer, and another 70 blasts during it. The blasts are considered a central stage in prayer, and it is important to listen to them with concentration and without distractions.
