Mother’s Day: what is the origin of the celebration?

The origin of Mother’s Day dates back to May 1907 when Anna Jarvis wanted to pay tribute to her mother, Anne Reeves Jarvis, at a West Virginia Methodist church following her death. Thanks to Jarvis, the first Mother’s Day was commemorated in the United States and in 1914 then-President Woodrow Wilson signed a bill to recognize Mother’s Day as a national holiday.

Mother’s Day in Colombia

In 1925, the then president of Colombia, Pedro Nel Ospina, through Decree 748 of 1926, made the second Sunday of May official as Mother’s Day throughout the national territory.

Some time later, the city of Cúcuta, capital of the department of Norte de Santander and the main border city between Colombia and Venezuela decided to move the date of Mother’s Day in the city; The reasons why the date of Mother’s Day was moved are not very clear, but the strongest theory suggests that it was the product of a commercial agreement.

Cúcuta currently celebrates Mother’s Day on the last Sunday of May, unlike the rest of the country that celebrates it on the second Sunday of this month. However, before the first round of the presidential elections, the date for this 2022 will change.

“Due to the presidential elections, a consultation was carried out with the affiliates, for which reason said celebration was determined for Sunday, May 22”said the National Federation of Merchants (Fenalco) in a statement.
