In 2024, Easter Sunday will be celebrated on March 31. This is a date for Americans to commemorate the traditional celebration of Christian origin year following year.
In this sense, with Easter Sunday, the end of Lent comes. This, in turn, represents the period of 40 days and nights that Jesus spent in the desert before his return to Jerusalem.
So, for this reason, Lent lasts six weeks. During this period, Catholic and Christian believers reflect and prepare to celebrate the Resurrection of Christ, commemorating Easter Day.
But, let us remember that in addition to Easter Sunday there are also other days included in the period that have the same connotation. We are talking regarding Palm Sunday and Good Friday.
Easter eggs, a popular tradition…
For many years, Easter eggs have been recognized as a symbol of rebirth and fertility. Therefore, decorating and hiding the famous “eggs” is already one of the most popular traditions to commemorate the date.
However, today, there are many theories that exist regarding the origin of the tradition. For example, it is suggested that eggs have always been part of the Easter Sunday celebration.
This is according to Carole Levin, professor of history and director of the medieval and Renaissance studies program at the University of Nebraska. “Apparently, the eggs were eaten at the festival and possibly also buried in the ground to stimulate fertility,” the expert explained.
On the other hand, some tend to relate the origin of Easter eggs to fasting on holy days. This is explained, fundamentally, because believers cannot eat meat or any other animal product during this period.
So the eggs used to be saved to be distributed once Lent was over. However, as eggs became a symbol of Easter, new traditions began to emerge such as painting and hiding them.
