Throughout its 125-year history, Goodyear has always been driven by technological innovation. One of those feats is Goodyear’s pride in being the developer of the “world’s fastest tire,” a claim that holds true across multiple disciplines.
On October 23, 1970, a milestone was set in the field of automotive technology when the Blue Flame rocket, fitted with Goodyear tires, broke the International Automobile Federation (FIA) land speed record, achieving an astonishing figure of 622.407 mph (1001.666 km/h) over a flying mile and 630.388 mph (1014.511 km/h) over a flying kilometer.
These milestones were achieved on the Bonneville Salt Flats, which offered ideal conditions for testing the limits of speed and vehicle performance. Furthermore, the extraordinary feat of breaking the speed record was achieved under the difficult circumstances of 5cm of snow, further highlighting its impressive nature.
Goodyear designed 8:00-25 tires for the vehicle, with a 34.8-inch outside diameter and a smooth tread surface to prevent heat buildup, filled with 350 psi nitrogen gas.
Blue Flame’s exceptional design and engineering, including its advanced rocket propulsion system, were instrumental in breaking the previous record, and the achievement served as a catalyst for further innovation in this field. There is no question that the vehicle’s remarkable achievement in breaking the record depended on its high-performance Goodyear tires, without which such a feat would have been impossible. These tires are a remarkable demonstration of human innovation and engineering expertise, as they enabled the vehicle to achieve unprecedented levels of speed and performance.
However, Goodyear’s achievement was not an isolated example, as the company had previously demonstrated its penchant for breaking records. In 1963, Goodyear was the first to develop a tire capable of exceeding 400 mph, when Craig Breedlove successfully drove his first Spirit of America.
In recent years, Goodyear has also equipped the British-built JCB DieselMax vehicle, which set a land speed record of 328 mph for diesel vehicles in 2006, and Volvo Trucks’ The Iron Knight, which broke two world speed records for trucks in 2016. The truck reached an average speed of 105 mph in a time of 21.29 seconds over 1,000 meters from a standing start. The Iron Knight also broke the 500 meter distance record, reaching 81.6 mph in 13.71 seconds from a standstill.
Goodyear has never stopped pushing the limits of the possible. His tires already represent a century and a quarter of innovation, driven by technological advances and the passion to offer tires of the highest quality and perfectly adapted to the needs of each client. Goodyear’s legacy goes far beyond the mere development of its tires; its influence derives from the significant advances and innovative progress that its technology has made over the past 125 years.
