There is a link between the occurrence of a serious form of Covid-19 and the presence of certain living fungi in our gastrointestinal tract. To understand this, you need to know that humans naturally have nearly 1013 microorganisms (bacteria, viruses, parasites) in their digestive tract, including fungi (mycobiota). However, in the event of an imbalance (dysbiosis) of the mycobiota, some of these fungi, classified as pathogenic, can alter the host’s immunity. Indeed, the immune system is a complex set of cells and organs that protect the body from foreign or dangerous invaders. To do this, when it detects their presence, it deploys various means of defense to destroy these pathogens, including the inflammatory reaction. But in people whose mycobiota is altered, with an over-representation of pathogenic fungi such as Candida albicans, the immune system seems to remain permanently activated, a breeding ground for the deployment of certain inflammatory diseases. Among them is the severe form of Covid-19. Researchers have notably demonstrated that patients with severe Covid-19 had intestinal Candida overgrowth, mycobiotic dysbiosis and systemic neutrophilia : sign of activation of the immune system, in particular white blood cells, and of an inflammatory reaction. These discoveries offer therapeutic perspectives for treating patients with prolonged symptoms of the infectious disease, long Covid, characterized by immune abnormalities.
